KUALA LUMPUR: There is a suggestion that to overcome the fear of public speaking, one just has to imagine the audience is naked.

But speaker cum facilitator Roopi Mohandas Lakhiani said this was bad advice as it would only make the speaker more nervous.

"This could be because people lack vocabulary and the confidence to speak, and are afraid of being embarrassed in front of other people," said Roopi.

She was at the NST Inside Scoop Series Public Speaking and Presentation Skills workshop, a two-day workshop, which started on Saturday.

The workshop was aimed at preparing people to overcome their fear of public speaking besides coping with nervousness, speech construction, impromptu speaking and getting people to listen.

"The participants were guided to equip themselves with public speaking skills to make them aware of their responsibilities and how to realise their true potential, as well as motivate them to bring out the best in themselves."

Fifty-one people attended the workshop at Balai Berita in Bangsar here.

Roopi, who has nine years' experience in public speaking, and has facilitated several NST-NIE workshops, said without proper preparation, students would feel anxious or uncertain to undertake public speaking.

The workshop, attended by participants aged between 16 and 60, covered a wide range of topics and activities.
