KUALA TERENGGANU: It's free, with low entry requirements, but there have been few takers for the Mengubah Destini Anak Bangsa (MDAB) programme offered by Universiti Teknologi Mara in the state.

Under MDAB, students from poor families get to pursue a course of their choice if they pass Bahasa Malaysia and English, as well as have credits in three other subjects in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. Only 130 students are pursuing their education under the programme, a long way off from the targeted 500.

Dungun UiTM Industrial and Social Linkages coordinator Associate Professor Norudin Mansor said even the required six-month pre-diploma programme was free.

"If they get at least a 2.0 CGPA (cumulative grade point average) for the pre-diploma, they won't have to pay for the following diploma course."

Awareness about MDAB was low as it had not been highlighted by the media, Norudin said at the Terengganu Youth Adventure 2011 sponsorship signing between UiTM, UMW Pennzoil Distributors Sdn Bhd and the state government at Wisma Darul Iman here yesterday.
