It is always best to have a bottle of vinegar with you when you venture out into the water

Resort puts up jellyfish warning signages

LANGKAWI: Berjaya Langkawi Resort has erected two jellyfish warning signages at its beach front.

Its general manager, Graeme L. Dwayer, said although there were few cases of jellyfish stings here, the resort was not taking any chances.

"The placement of warning signs are practised in Australia and we adopted such a measure to prevent our guests from being stung.

"Regardless of its species, every jellyfish sting will leave a painful effect.

"If it is left untreated, a victim will suffer from excessive pain and itching red welts which may last for days."

Risk description on jellyfish attack and vinegar application procedures are also displayed on both signages.

Dwayer said the resort had also placed three vinegar poles at strategic spots on its beach front as an immediate remedial action in the event of a jellyfish sting.

"Vinegar is very useful in treating jellyfish sting.

"The liquid works by breaking down the poisonous cells when the tentacles of the marine creature come into contact with human skin.

"In 30 seconds, you can stop the venom from spreading and causing further pain.

"It is always best to have a bottle of vinegar with you when you venture out into the water," Dwayer said.

Jellyfish are usually found near the surface of the sea and more than a kilometre from the shore.

Symptoms of jellyfish sting include intense pain and itchiness.

Severe reactions include difficulty in breathing, coma and even death.
